Land Acknowledgement

The National Indigenous Residential School Museum of Canada is located on the lands of Long Plain First Nation, a signatory to Treaty One, within the traditional territories of the Anishinaabeg, Dakota Oywe, Ininiwak, Anisininewuk, Denesuline, and the National Homeland of the Red River Métis.

This museum is situated at the former Rufus Prince Residential School, a place that carries profound histories and memories for Survivors, their families, and communities across this region and throughout Canada. We acknowledge the children who attended this school, the families who were separated, and the generations whose lives continue to be shaped by the legacy of residential schools.

Today, under the leadership and stewardship of Long Plain First Nation and guided by Survivors and their families, this site is being transformed into a place of truth, remembrance, learning, healing, and hope.

As visitors enter this space, we invite them to recognize that the land itself holds stories. The exhibits, gathering spaces, and connections to Crescent Lake are intended to honour those stories and create opportunities for reflection, ceremony, education, and healing.

We offer our respect to the land, to the ancestors, to the Survivors, and to all those who continue the work of truth and reconciliation.
